Removable Dentures

DENTURES

Dentures are artificial  replacement for natural teeth and gums. If natural teeth are lost due to an accident , gum disease  or another reason, a denture is one of the ways to replace them. Dentures are usually removable. It takes sometime to get used to them and they may cause some sore spots at first.

There are two types of  Dentures:

  • Partial Denture

  • Complete Denture

See your dentist:

See  your dentist at least once a year to check your soft tissue for any sore spots and cancer screening. Loose dentures may cause sore spots and infection. They occasionally need adjustment and reline, to fit well.  Your dentist will examine that as well.

HOW DENTURES ARE MADE:

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and use it to make a model of your teeth. Artificial teeth will be arranged on the model to custom- make the dentures. You may have to visit your dentist a few times to try in the dentures in different stages before they are processed and ready to use.

how to care for your dentures:

Full and partial dentures need to be cleaned  every day.  Plaque and tartar can build up on the dentures and cause bad breath, stains, and gum infection. It can also spread to the remaining natural teeth and cause cavities.

After each meal take the dentures out for cleaning. Use a soft bristled toothbrush to clean your gums, then floss and brush your natural teeth. Rinse the dentures under  warm water. Brush your dentures with a soft bristled toothbrush or a denture toothbrush and a mild soap. Rinse the dentures in clean water before putting them back in your mouth.

Take your dentures out at night to let your gums rest. Clean your dentures and put them  in  water with or without denture cleaner.

Do not use household cleaners and toothpaste to clean your dentures. They are too abrasive and leave scratches on your dentures. Bacteria can grow on the scratches .

Complete dentures/ Full Dentures/ False teeth:

They are made if all of natural teeth are missing. They are also called “false teeth”. Complete dentures are removable and held in place by suction and retention from jaw bones.

OVER-DENTURE:

An over-denture attaches or rests on the natural teeth or implants and gets some of its retention from it. It is usually recommended if the dentures are loose. It is removable prosthesis.

conventional dentures:

Conventional dentures are made after teeth are removed  and soft and hard tissue of jaw bones are healed.

 IMMEdiate dentures:

Immediate dentures are made before diseased or broken teeth are removed. They are delivered the day of extraction. The benefit of it is not being without teeth during healing time. Immediate dentures are made on a models taken from the jaw before extraction of the affected teeth.

Removable Partial Denture

Removable partial dentures are recommended if the nearby teeth are not strong enough to hold a fixed bridge or resist biting forces. They are made up of one or more artificial teeth which are arranged on  an acrylic or metal base  and is held in place by clasps that fit on adjacent natural teeth.
